Story
The film is considered the first mega-hit film in Malayalam. The film portrayed the life of simple folk in a small village in Kerala. The treatment of film is simple, objective and straightforward.

Soman is lived with his elder brother Raju and wife Janu. Soman is in love with a poor performer’s daughter, Lakshmi. Lakshmi belongs to a lower caste.  They married and give birth to a son. Soman goes to the city for searching of job.

Soman hit by a car driven by a rich young woman who takes him home. She posted him as the manager of her estate. Lakshmi faces harassment at the hands of Janu and her brother. Janu received Soman’s letters and money order impersonating Lakshmi.

Meanwhile Lakshmi leaves the village in search of Soman. She sees Soman with his woman employer and suspects him of being disloyal. Lakshmi tries to kill her child and commit suicide. But what saves her is the instinct of motherhood. Lakshmi gets together a band of beggars and organizes a home for them. She uses her talent as an actress and collects fund for the home by staging plays.

Janu’s brother killed in the village. The case is misleading and Soman suspected to the murder. Lakshmi recognizes her husband and help him. They reunited. Janu become a begger. Lakshmi recognize her and takes home.

There were 14 songs in the film.
